Dynamic times ahead as work ramps up on the $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf development in Brisbane, with 2,000 construction workers expected to be involved by 2021.
Destination Brisbane Consortium is delivering the landmark development, which spans 26 hectares of land and water and unites repurposed heritage buildings with elegant architecture.
During the initial stages, Brisbane’s best architects, urban designers, heritage specialists, landscapers and town planners took part in extensive consultation.
More recently, Multiplex was named preferred contractor to deliver the major construction works for the Resort Development. Probuild are also on board for excavation and shoring works.
To make way for the new build, 160,000 tonne of material will be removed during the demolition of three former government buildings.
“Queen’s Wharf Brisbane Integrated Resort Development is a massive contract that in total will include approximately 370,000m2 of floor area and 105,000m2 of energy efficient glazed façade,” Destination Brisbane Consortium Project Director Simon Crooks said in a media release.

The former Executive Building is the tallest building to be demolished in Brisbane’s history. It stands at 15 storeys and is more than 60 metres.
With a completion date of 2022, Queen’s Wharf is set to transform Brisbane’s CBD and the river’s edge with an iconic design that embraces the infamous subtropical climate and celebrates the precinct’s Indigenous and European heritage.
Besides serving as a major tourist attraction, Queen’s Wharf Brisbane will deliver economic benefits. It will provide thousands of construction and operational jobs along with opportunities for suppliers.
The Consortium has engaged with the Industry Capability Network (ICN) to provide a clear process for potential suppliers to register their interest. To view the packages currently available, you can visit www.queenswharfbrisbane.icn.org.au.
This project will add to the already positive results the Construction Industry is seeing in Brisbane, where construction employment sitting nicely in the Top 5 industries.
Cottee Parker Architects, a company now celebrating its 30th year in business, has been serving as the project’s Lead Designer for several years.
Its design mirrors the State’s vision for creating an international tourist destination. It delivers an iconic piece of architecture that will attract local and international visitors.

Embracing the use of virtual reality technology as a design tool, Cottee Parker has been working hard to refine its design processes over the last few years. As a result, it has used the technology to produce immersive virtual environments and take developers inside the project designs, including Queen’s Wharf.
Cottee Parker believes this physical interaction with the designs works alongside the more complex features of the technology to add further layers of reality to the virtual experience. Thus, it provides unparalleled insight into a project during pre-construction phases.

Derek Entesano, head of the presentation unit at Cottee Parker Architects said, “We produced 20 virtual reality 360-degree images for Queen’s Wharf in Brisbane to understand the different spaces and to assess whether it fit in with the heritage aspects of the project.”
“During the recent Brisbane Open House event, it was fun watching the responses from people when they’re able to stand up on the Sky Deck of Queen’s Wharf, on top of the glass walkway and get a sense of really being in the project.”
