The Samuels Group, Inc.

Iowa • Michigan • Minnesota • Wisconsin
General Contractor

General Construction Management
The history of The Samuels Group may seem unconventional compared to other construction companies. That’s because it is. Founder, Sid Samuels, previously served in a leadership role at a major construction firm alongside Kurt Berner. With a vision for the potential growth in the area, and recognizing the untapped potential of the dedicated team he worked with, Sid invested in his dream and purchased the company’s Wisconsin division. To ensure the leadership of the company remained strong, Sid asked Kurt to join him in the journey as Vice President of Operations. Other talented team members also captured the vision for what a new kind of design, construction, and commercial furnishings firm could be like and remained an integral part of the team, helping to ensure the company's success. At that, The Samuels Group was born, and so was a fresh approach to the commercial construction industry. Since then — and hundreds of building projects later — the team has more than doubled and includes a diverse set of skills, personalities, and experience. Today, The Samuels Group stands out as an innovator among Midwest commercial construction contractors, design-build, and furniture solution firms with offices in Wausau, Wisconsin and West Des Moines, Iowa. Their team goes beyond just designing, building, restoring, and furnishing beautiful and functional structures; they help build trust with a transparent, personalized, and consultative approach.

Brief History of Consumers Lumber During the 1930s, we operated yards in Spirit Lake, Montgomery and Superior and supervised them from Mason City. At that time, Ben A. Webster of Mason City was president. Charles F. Lindquist of the Spirit Lake yard was vice-president and Burt Whirry ran the Montgomery yard and Harry Ruckman the Superior yard. In 1945, eventual president Fred A. Weber joined the company. The D.L. Aitchison Lumber Yard in Arnolds Park was purchased in 1949. In 1950 Robert E. Bergquist joined the company. The Montgomery yard was closed in 1955, and the Arnolds Park yard was closed in 1971 leaving only the Spirit Lake location. A home panelizing and truss company (Citation Homes) was started in 1966 headed up by senior vice president Bergquist. Mike Stineman joined the company in 1977 and was elected President in 1981 with the retirement of Fred Weber. In June of 1986, after going through the tough economic times of the early ’80s, Consumers Lumber was separated from Citation Homes and sold to two Spencer businessmen, Gene Luken and Bill Sanders. Luken bought out Sanders in 1991 and sold to long time employees Jim Johnson and Rod Lange in June of 2002. At that same time Spencer Lumber in Spencer Iowa was purchased. Johnson purchased Lange’s shares in the spring of 2008, making him the sole owner. At that same time Johnson changed the name of Spencer Lumber to Consumers Lumber Company as they continue to operate as today. Johnson operated the company until April of 2016. At that time the company was once again sold to long time employees Jamie Storey and Jason Lorenzen. Storey and Lorenzen continue to operate Consumers Lumber today. Along with a well experienced staff, we operate under the same values and standards focusing on integrity, passion for excellence, and teamwork that has always made Consumers Lumber stand above the rest.
