The Challenge

Fletcher Construction operates three major brands in New Zealand and the South Pacific – Fletcher Construction, Higgins and Brian Perry Civil. Their project timelines span from a single day to several years. These diverse requirements need a central project delivery solution for greater efficiency and consistency across the business. Its people – from site teams to head office management – require a transparent and collaborative solution, driving accountability and an audit trail ensuring they will meet and exceed customer quality requirements.

The Solution

As part of their ongoing digital transformation program, Procore Project Management technology is being rolled out to every Brian Perry Civil project to create a shared ecosystem for success. The implementation of Procore’s core tool set has removed paper from sites, allowing teams to digitise processes and access quality data to streamline complex projects.

Mission Critical Project, Mission Critical Solution

The Seaview Wharf is approaching 50 years of operation, however the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake event resulted in damage to the wharf and pipeline facilities. The Seaview Wharf is being upgraded while it remains fully operational to meet modern standards for fuel supply wharves. The Brian Perry Civil team is undertaking a multi-phase remediation and replacement program as part of The Seaview Energy Resilience Project.

“Seaview Wharf remediation is a project of national importance – its supplies are needed to keep the New Zealand economy moving," outlined Gabriela Koneski, Construction Manager, Brian Perry Civil. "Procore is helping us control a project challenged by a harsh marine environment, new standards for earthquake resilience and long delivery times. Procore tools help us deliver this job more efficiently and communicate more effectively with our multiple stakeholders and client.”

Procore keeps all project information in one transparent solution, linking every stakeholder in the multi-phase construction project. Collecting information on-site from multiple sources in real time means better collaboration and streamlined decision-making.

"The project here is very complex, and the project specifications are really detailed. Everything has to be right before we start construction, as this is taking place on the wharf. Procore enables real-time verification of everything we receive on site and facilitates direct communication with designers for official correspondence and approvals, ensuring accuracy before work begins” says Koneski.

How Procore Ups the Ante on Project Monitoring and Quality Outcomes

The real-time access and visibility of up to date project plans within Procore is delivering faster and more accurate collaboration for everyone—from construction managers to site engineers and design consultants. Centralised drawings, specifications, and communications within Procore is replacing previously untrackable emails and phone calls, allowing Brian Perry Civil to maintain accurate records every time.

For Koneski, avoiding paper on-site was crucial. "Documenting quality records is important for the site team, our designers, and the client. Procore confirms we are delivering the project the way it’s meant to be delivered.”

Capturing and sharing this information, in a transparent process, is necessary with multiple stakeholders, including the New Zealand government, who are carefully monitoring the project and its outcomes.

According to Thomas Callan, Project Engineer, centralising records within Procore means they are no longer relying on third-party data. "How we capture the information is just as important as what we are capturing. Being on-site with a mobile phone or tablet and taking photographs means nothing is missed. And it's intuitive to how site teams need to work—quickly and securely."

Procore is uploading inspection forms for every single concrete pile, cap and pour on a daily and weekly basis. On-site inspections upload forms and photos straight into Procore and this is directed to the person responsible – and fully accountable – for monitoring those inspections.

Callan emphasises, “Using Procore as a Quality management tool has been very helpful for the entire team. We've moved away from paper checklists and chasing paper trails in Wellington's notoriously wet and windy weather. Everyone on site has the tools and ability to record evidence and documentation as they go.”

Creating a Knowledge Base for Future Projects

Implementing Procore across hundreds of projects has created a specialist knowledge base for future infrastructure projects. The Procore dashboard provides access to data for all stakeholders, including the broader management team. Viewable milestone metrics indicate where projects may need additional resources or support in resolving challenges to move through the multiple phases at Seaview Wharf. The information required to assess and make these decisions is organised and easy to navigate. It is also easy to replicate and share lessons learned – proving valuable for future infrastructure tenders and projects.

To maximise Procore utilisation, the broader team is currently introducing and reporting on weekly, fortnightly, and monthly utilisation rates. This process will identify gaps and opportunities to improve the quality of outcomes using Procore. Administrators are now able to review the tools being used within Procore by combining Procore reporting analytics with Power BI across all projects, identifying popular tools and solutions that may need more training and/or adoption.
