Martinus uses quality data to help build NZ's City Rail Link

By digitizing site data, Procore makes information more accessible and reduces documentation and collaboration time

The Challenge

As Martinus faced rapid growth, they needed a better solution for recording and integrating vast amounts of project management, financial, quality, and health, safety and environment (HSE) data. To achieve their rigorous standards of quality assurance, Martinus eliminated manual processes and paper from their building processes on projects around the world.

The Solution

This plan led to Procore being implemented across all Martinus projects in 2019 to capture extensive information throughout every construction phase. And so began the implementation of Procore Preconstruction, Project Management, Quality and Safety, Project Financials and Workforce Planning. Across all aspects of construction, Procore’s platform easily records and digitises site data, making project information more transparent and easily accessible. This streamlines and reduces time spent documenting and collaborating on critical project activity.

Procore is playing a crucial role today for Martinus in the City Rail Link project–Auckland's largest transport infrastructure project ever undertaken. With a need to review crucial and time-sensitive information in real-time, Procore is centralising the data for hundreds of workers operating on the project 24/7. The platform is helping Martinus teams record, assign and resolve action items, and further collaborate with subcontractors.

“Procore is significantly reducing project administration for the work we’re doing on the City Rail Link project. Centralising and digitising our data is enhancing our access, efficiency, accuracy and customer service standards while keeping the team focused on the bigger picture of mission-critical project delivery,” said Helen.

Consistent Processes and Procedures Support Project Quality

The City Rail Link project plans to double capacity during peak times for residents of the capital city, making train journeys easier and quicker. Martinus was sub-contracted by Link Alliance to renovate two existing underground train stations and construct connecting tracks, wiring and tunnels to two new train stations.

From day one, Procore was integrated into Martinus' role in the project, digitising the vast amount of data being generated over the project’s lifespan.

Today Martinus is recording more project data digitally than ever before. These recording and reporting efficiencies are translating into greater productivity outcomes for over 250 workers building 24/7. Real-time onsite data is capturing and consolidating inspections, incidents and actions supporting Martinus compliance requirements.

The access Procore provides to photographic evidence and additional attachments makes it easier for stakeholders to access reliable project information promptly, regardless of their location. Digital registers are replacing information silos, distilling valuable data into a single platform.

“Procore is key for Martinus working on the City Rail Link project for recording and capturing the data that we have coming from site to all our different stakeholders, from the site supervisors, right through to the office admins,” she continued.

Procore is providing greater consistency in processes and procedures, streamlining communication, and facilitating seamless transitions between project tasks and phases for Martinus staff and contractors.

Addressing Bottlenecks and Delivering Better Outcomes

Procore is helping enhance project compliance outcomes. Procore Submittals and Correspondence tools enable ITP data to be easily accessible and integrated into the compliance chain. Procore Quality and Safety tools are assisting the team and its partners to digitally record and manage incidents to meet various HSE and Rail Safety legislation requirements. New digital registers are providing greater support for reporting requirements and business analysis to help improve future outcomes.

Any potential platform and track project bottlenecks are being monitored and addressed through real-time digital registers where due dates and timelines are managed within the Submittals, Observation & Defects tools. This additional transparency and processes are identifying potential trigger delays, issues, and hold points anywhere on the platform and tracks, while offering quick resolutions and assistance when required.

“Procore is delivering efficiencies for Martinus. The mobile app capabilities mean we are managing and tracking our actions on site, streamlining another previously manual and very time-consuming task,” she said.

The growing awareness for greater financial management in the construction sector, particularly for nation-building projects like the City Rail Link project is made easier with Procore. Procore Commitments workflows are now directing volume purchase orders (PO) to budget holders, ensuring there is an appropriate level of approval before purchases are being made. Digital POs are reducing duplicated orders and are creating greater buying power and cost efficiencies.

“Procore is also creating a transparent and trackable register for change events and variations, plus POs are now linked. This means we are managing project expenses and client expectations better than before with Procore Commitments. It’s more predictable and more productive,” commented Helen.
