The Challenge

Ferrovial operated manual tools and traditional processes, which hindered communication and collaboration among team members and overall visibility into their projects. They knew that adopting new technology would bring resistance, but the need to increase efficiency and sustainability in their infrastructure projects outweighed the risks––and they began to look for an innovative solution.

Ferrovial Enhances Efficiency With Procore’s Innovative Platform

With over 63,000 employees, Ferrovial Construction is recognized as a multinational industrial contractor, building iconic projects across the globe, including London's Heathrow Airport. However, using manual tools and processes didn’t align with the company’s value in innovation. They wanted to find a solution that would increase efficiency, communication and collaboration––and they did not take the search lightly.

Ferrovial gathered a group of experts within their organisation who could each provide a different perspective and ensure the solution would work for everyone. They looked at all market options––including developing their own software and seeing what their competitors were using. After conducting several demos and pilot programs, one platform stood out above the rest.

When they discovered Procore, Ferrovial was excited to have immediate access to their project information, quickly reducing travel and logistical time between the site and the office. Having all the information in one place also allowed the team to extract and leverage their project data to manage risk––helping them see where problems occurred so they could avoid making similar mistakes on future projects.

Implementing technological solutions on-site also facilitated greater communication and collaboration among team members. As Andrés Cabrera, Data Manager at Ferrovial Construction, put it, “Digital tools provide a workspace in which people don't have to ask questions about how to collaborate, rather it's intuitive for them.”

While Ferrovial was excited to find an innovative solution, they also knew there was a possibility teams would be resistant to the change in processes. Finding a solution that the team actually wanted to use was extremely important.

After looking through their options, it was evident that Procore was developed specifically for the construction industry. Procore developers work alongside industry professionals to make software that’s intuitive and easy to use. Cabrera is passionate about how Procore has changed the team’s relationship with technology. “Procore achieved a cultural change regarding technology. During a visit to a recent project, a colleague with 30 years of experience commented that it was the first time we offered a useful tool for the entire team,” he says. Despite the substantial challenge of digitising work processes for a company of Ferrovial's size and complexity, it has proven to be a resounding success. “When we are able to have a customer in the US, France or any other country, and they can log in and see in real time how the project is going––see the photos from the site, the plan and the approvals––this transparency is what helps us gain confidence with our clients and in the market in general,” says Cabrera.

The transformation brought about by digitisation was significant for Ferrovial, allowing them to improve efficiency, proactively manage risks and increase collaboration among team members. It's evident that technology has become key to achieving project success and greater optimisation of their operations.
