Design and Engineering
REX is an internationally acclaimed architecture and design firm based in New York City. Believing architecture should do things, not simply represent them, REX challenges and advances building typologies, and promotes the agency of architecture. REX aspires to produce inventive designs so functionally specific that they offer distinct aesthetic experiences. Unprejudiced by conventions, preconceived aesthetic strategies, or outcomes, the REX team returns to root problems and doggedly explores them with critical naiveté. Through this process, REX exposes solutions that transcend those which could have initially or individually been imagined. REX’s current projects include the Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center in New York City (under construction); the new performing arts center for Brown University in Providence (under construction); the Necklace Residence on Long Island (under construction); the Mercedes-Benz Future Lab & Museum in Stuttgart; Elizabeth Quay, a 55-story mixed-use tower in Perth; and 205 North Quay, a 40-story office building in Brisbane. Seminal projects include the AT&T Performing Arts Center Dee & Charles Wyly Theatre in Dallas; the Vakko Fashion Center & Power Media Headquarters in Istanbul; and the Seattle Central Library. Joshua led the latter project—hailed by Herbert Muschamp in The New York Times as “the most exciting new building it has been my honor to review in more than 30 years of writing about architecture”—while founding partner of OMA New York (the firm he later rebranded as REX). REX’s recently completed projects include 2050 M Street, a premium office building in Washington, DC that hosts CBS’s Washington Bureau; and the transformation of Five Manhattan West, the largest adaptive reuse project in New York City’s history. REX’s work has been recognized with the profession’s top accolades, including two AIA National Honor Awards, a U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology National Honor Award, an American Library Association National Building Award, two American Council of Engineering Companies’ National Gold Awards, a CTBUH Award of Excellence, Time magazine’s Building of the Year, and numerous AIA New York, ArchDaily, Architect/Progressive Architecture, Architect’s Newspaper, Architectural Review/MIPIM, Architizer, and Wallpaper* design awards. REX has twice been named one of the World’s Top 10 Innovative Companies in Architecture by Fast Company.

The firm of SR Harwood Consulting Engineering, P.C. is a continuation of a long term established New York City firm, Harwood Associates Consulting Engineers, which was founded by Franklin Harwood in 1952. Steven Robert Harwood P.E. initially worked 4 years at Weiskopf and Pickworth and then one year at the Office of Irwin Cantor and then subsequently became a principal partner with Franklin Harwood in 1982. Steven Harwood was also a principal of Selnick/Harwood Consulting Engineers since its inception in 1993 until forming the firm S.R. Harwood Consulting Engineering, PC in February 2010 Steven Harwood received his BSCE at SUNY Buffalo in 1976 and MSCE from Columbia University in 1979. Now having over 46 years of extensive New York City experience in structural engineering and having analyzed and designed various structural systems for seismic, hurricane and blast zone forces, provided forensic investigations, rehabilitative repairs, the firm can offer superior design services, consultation, peer review, and expert witness consulting. I personally have designed residential and commercial: low-, mid-, and high-rise buildings in steel and concrete and reinforced concrete masonry. I have performed extensive investigations of deteriorated structures to check adequacy existing conditions and to provide rehabilitation designs as deemed necessary. Many of the structures that were retrofit were early steel frame buildings with cinder concrete slabs or hundred-year-old buildings with cast iron columns or concrete structures with specialized slab systems. I also have made numerous designs at major medical centers to alter, reinforce and integrate existing structural systems to adapt to new functional requirements . I have extensive experience in emergency department alterations, building expansions and additions and overbuilds, operating rooms, MRI, PET scan, XRAY, Lithotripter, Dialysis, and Cardiac Cath lab installations. Examples of hospital work in Long Island would be the structural design for LIJ Emergency Department, Two separate New linear accelerators below ground structures, The Hearing and Speech Pavilion Addition, and OR vertical Expansions. Currently in design phase is Jamaica Hospital’s 36,000 square foot Emergency Department Addition, and in construction phase is the Northport V.A. Emergency Department Addition. The firm has designed college gymnasiums, dormitories, student unions and school buildings, provided designs for numerous libraries and cost-efficient nursing homes throughout New York. A component of our work is cost optimized structural systems for housing such as flat slab residential structures, reinforced concrete bearing walls structures with precast plank floor systems, and steel frame structures. Many of the residential projects are mixed use with open commercial space or parking below the residential structure above. Foundations for these buildings have included piles, caissons, pile supported mats, mat foundations, and simple spread footings. We provide rehabilitative and new designs for air handler and water tank dunnage, new elevator shafts and penthouses, floor openings for communicating stairs, heavy file storage supports, precious item vaults, exterior special signage, sculpture bases, sidewalk vault repairs and plaza restorations. My experience has proved valuable for consultation to attorneys and insurance companies for analysis of as built construction deficiencies and adjacent development impact on adjacent properties and fire damages. This work usually encompasses foundation issues, soil remediation, underpinning, review of license agreements and structural issues within ZELDA agreements. Examples of outstanding projects are the hardened blast resistant concrete structural system that we designed for the new 250,000 square foot structure that houses the FAA Northeast Headquarters in New York City, the National Naval Aviation Museum’s entrance space frame quadrant and the pylon for the exterior F-14 exhibit located in Pensacola, Florida which are subject to the Gulf Coast’s hurricane wind forces, and the property protection review for 240 Central Park South.
