From our beginnings as a producer of poles in Sandpoint, Idaho, in 1916, we now have just over 107 years of pole experience behind us. Formerly McFarland Cascade, the company today is Stella-Jones Corporation, a subsidiary of Stella Jones Inc. (SJ, TSX). We currently operate treating facilities in Eugene and Sheridan, Oregon; Tacoma and Arlington, Washington; Silver Springs, Nevada; Scooba, Mississippi; Whitmire, South Carolina; Rison, Arkansas; Lufkin and Jasper, Texas, Noble and Pineville, Louisiana; Brierfield, Alabama; Cameron, Wisconsin; Cordele, Georgia; Warsaw, Virginia; New Westminster, Galloway and Prince George, British Columbia; Carseland, Alberta; Delson, Gatineau and Sorel, Quebec; Truro, Nova Scotia; Kirkland Lake, and Guelph, Ontario. Stella-Jones also has long term capacity utilization agreement covering production from East Point, Georgia. Stella-Jones Corporation is currently the largest manufacturer of utility poles in North America. In addition to our treating facilities, we are able to provide enhanced logistics and supply reliability through our rail car fleet, soon to be in excess of 1,000+ owned/leased railcars; a combination of company owned, and independent trucking resources; and a large network of company operated distribution facilities located throughout North America. In response to the wildfire threat, Stella-Jones Corporation now supplies poles specially wrapped with intumescent coated fiberglass mesh. The same material is also available in rolls, to allow customers to apply the fire resistant wrap to existing poles installed in the field. Vanalt’s primary focus is to provide electrical construction services for the transit industry. Vanalt has sales of up to $30 million yearly in this market and a bonding capacity of over $100 million. Current and recent customers include SEPTA, the Delaware River Port Authority, New Jersey Transit, AMTRAK, PennDOT, DDOT (Washington DC), the Maryland MTA and the Toronto Transit Commission. Geographically, the majority of Vanalt’s work has been in Pennsylvania and New Jersey; however, Vanalt has done projects in several other states and DC. As a union electrical contractor, Vanalt has agreements with I.B.E.W. chapters that are in the areas where the company operates. Vanalt has linemen and electricians who are assigned work based on union jurisdictions. Each project is managed by a collaborative team consisting of a project manager and a field superintendent or general foreman. The project manager is responsible for the engineering, procurement, quality assurance, administrative and financial aspects of the project and the superintendent or general foreman is responsible for field personnel, safety, tooling and equipment. Planning, scheduling and other duties are shared. Vanalt’s five project managers and key field personnel all have many years of experience in the type of work that Vanalt performs. The company also has an engineering and office staff and mechanics to support the project management and field operations.
