The Challenge

The crux of what Axiom is built upon is client relationships and consistently meeting client expectations. Projects are becoming increasingly complex and there’s a large amount of work involved in the operations and project management. There’s a ton of information that needs to be vetted, organized and consolidated while also being easily accessible to all project collaborators.

The Results

  • Teams spent less time on operational tasks and could focus more on meeting client needs and expectations
  • Teams improved collaboration and task completion efficiency, leading to faster project execution and better overall results
  • All project information was consolidated into a single, centralized platform, improving accessibility and organization

We want to create clients for life. Axiom doesn’t look at one project in a one-off perspective. It’s more about the relationship going forward for multiple, multiple years.

Axiom Builders

The story

Since 2003, Axiom Builders has grown into one of B.C.’s largest construction companies and is active in both residential and commercial construction. Headquartered in Vancouver, the company also has a branch office in Calgary and satellite offices in Edmonton and Seattle. In all regions, they are supported by tradespeople who have been part of the Axiom team for decades.

Since implementing Procore, Axiom has been able to focus less on the operations and spend more time on client expectations to ensure successful delivery. Their teams can now focus on tasks at hand and streamline their day-to-day. "In the last 15,000 units we completed, we average less than 3 deficiencies per suite. And that’s really unheard of in the industry and that’s what our guys and our teams strive for and that’s what we’re known for," says Mike McDonough, Chief Operating Officer at Axiom Builders.

Not just building high-rises, but relationships

Axiom takes its client relationships very seriously—its aim is to create clients for life. When considering construction technology to implement, Axiom ultimately wanted their teams to work more cohesively with their consultants, trades, and clients.

"Axiom doesn’t look at one project in a one-off perspective. It’s more about the relationship going forward for multiple, multiple years," says Tom Hickman, Interior Superintendent at Axiom Builders. "It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to the way we deal with our clients. Nothing we do is ever done without first considering the clients’ best interests." "I think over time you’re going to see Procore become the standard in the industry," Hickman says. "As more people learn the format and learn how to use it, and they interact with it, I think the construction industry will grow to expect it. And I think that’s really key going forward."

The Axiom team embraces technology, knowing that moving forward, it will be a staple in the industry and a key element to continue building their relationships. They feel the software has ultimately allowed them to better serve their clients in the long run. Jordan Thomas, Senior Vice President at Axiom, says that Procore has helped streamline their operations so they can run big projects with lean teams while allowing them to be laser-focused on the client’s expectations and managing them. When looking into the best way to make the most efficient use of their team’s time, Thomas says that it was a huge decision in bringing on Procore. "Procore has allowed our project teams to be more efficient, which gives them more time to understand what our clients’ expectations are and make sure we deliver on them."

Not working with each other, but for each other

Axiom believes that teamwork is at the heart of construction—it’s part of everything they do, whether it’s on site, with an owner, the head office, or the consulting team. Nearly every single task involves more than one person to complete. They have built a team with a strong sense of commitment and set each other up for success.

In the spirit of teamwork and collaboration, and given that projects are getting more and more complex, there’s a large quantity of information that needs to be organized in a format that’s easily accessible for everyone on site. Hickman has found that the Procore format is user-friendly and easy for his team to use. Another superintendent with Axiom says that it has made tasks on site much easier.

"Traditionally I’d have to get information conveyed down the line of command to the different trades," he says. "With Procore, I can just send it out. The ubiquitous nature of Procore is bringing the team together and that’s essential for me on a daily basis."

"At the end of the day, Procore consolidates everything and that’s a major asset," Hickman says. "Procore is quite often the first thing I open in the morning and the last thing I close at night. It just allows you to focus on the tasks at hand within Procore, instead of going between programs to complete tasks."
